Cataract occurs as a gradual clouding or haziness of the lens, which causes sight to become blurred, colours to fade and lights to appear dazzling. In some cases cataract may also lead to double vision. Cataract surgery nowadays is a very safe procedure, and on of the commonest operations performed in the world. Cataract most often affects those over the age of 60, however cataracts can develop at birth, and sometimes cataract surgery is performed in babies who are only a few weeks old. Most causes of cataract have been identified, most commonly it represents an age-related phenomenon likely related to cumulative ultraviolet exposure, but otherwise it can be caused by trauma to the eye or head region, or less commonly it can be caused by the use of different forms of steroid treatment. Steroid eye drops typically cause cataract are many many months of use, and those taking steroid tablets (for example prednisolone) can develop cataract over many months or years if prolonged steroid treatment is required. Fortunately cataracts are easily dealt with and with careful surgery, the risk of a complication is very low.
